Even Your Metal Water Bottle May Contain BPA!
by www.SixWise.com
In an attempt to avoid the chemical toxin bisphenol-A (BPA) common in plastic water bottles, many consumers have made the switch to metal water bottles made from aluminum, stainless steel or another combination of metal.
Do you use a metal water bottle because you think it’s safer than plastic? A leading manufacturer of metal water bottles has just admitted some varieties contain BPA!
|
If you’re new to the issue, BPA mimics the female hormone estrogen and may affect fertility and promote cancer. And just last year it came out that BPA may also lead to heart disease, diabetes and liver problems.
The chemical, which is widely used in plastic water bottles, can leach out of plastic during everyday use and even low levels have been linked to negative health effects.
Some consumers looking for a healthier and more environmentally friendly choice have therefore ditched their plastic water bottles in favor of seemingly healthier metal varieties.
However, your metal water bottle may also contain BPA!
Did SIGG USA Deceive the Public?
Sigg USA, a manufacturer of reusable metal bottles that have earned a reputation for being eco-friendly, makes estimated sales of about $100 million. Sales for SIGG USA really exploded in 2007, just as concerns surrounding BPA became more widely known, and the brand is now available in 15,000 stores around the world.
But there is one problem.
According to a recently released letter by SIGG CEO Steve Wasik, some Sigg bottles do, in fact, contain BPA. Specifically, bottles produced before August 2008 contain trace amounts of BPA in the bottle liner, however prior company messages and media reports have led consumers to believe the bottles are BPA-free.
Although SIGG maintains that tests revealed no migration or leaching of BPA from the inner liner, many consumers bought the bottles under the assumption they were BPA-free. Wasik said in his letter:
“I am sorry that we did not make our communications on the original SIGG liner more clear from the very beginning. I have learned much over the past 2 weeks. I learned that many of you purchased SIGG bottles - not just because they were free from leaching and safe - but because you believed that SIGGs contained no BPA.
I learned that, although SIGG never marketed the former liner as “BPA Free” we should have done a better job of both clearly communicating about our liner as well as policing others who may have misunderstood the SIGG message.”
If you have a SIGG bottle and want to know whether you have the old liner that contains BPA, or the new BPA-free liner, you can find out by looking at the color. The BPA-containing liners have a shiny copper bronze finish, while the new BPA-free versions have a dull pale yellow coating. Check the inside lip of the bottle to be sure.
